We are currently looking for a Senior Legal Counsel to oversee all of our legal operations and be at the forefront of innovation here at Checkatrade. This role requires a legal professional with experience (7+ PQE) in commercial law with a key understanding of technology and product support within a business environment. To be successful you will be able to work in a fast paced environment whilst being able to handle novel legal challenges. As you will play a critical role in shaping the legal landscape of our company, working with the business on new innovations and ideas, and contributing to strategic decision-making processes.
Role responsibilities:
Legal Leadership and Strategy:
- Support the Deputy General Counsel on all operational support matters working closely with them to deliver the highest standard of legal excellence and commercial advice at all times on all matters.
- Actively partner with the business and contribute to the overall management and strategic direction of the operation of the company, demonstrating ownership and accountability for workstreams and delivery of the product vision.
- Ensure all stakeholder interactions are managed with a high level of professionalism and integrity and be able to comfortable make data driven, strategic decisions.
- Provide expert legal advice, managing the day-to-day engagement with all external law firm relationships and support to all business stakeholders on a wide range of legal issues, including product development, strategy, commercial law, commercial contracts, data privacy, and corporate governance.
- Oversee and ensure compliance with UK (and other) laws and regulations relevant to the business and its operations.
- Adopt and deliver the integration of new and existing legal technologies to enhance innovation within the legal department and the broader business and stay up-to-date of advancements in legal tech and leverage these tools to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
Commercial, Corporate and Data Law:
- Provide guidance on corporate governance matters, including (as required) assisting in corporate structuring, mergers and acquisitions, and other corporate transactions.
- Draft and implement legal playbooks, protocols and procedures to deliver tangible operational efficiencies to the wider team.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, partnership agreements, and supplier contracts and advise on legal risks, business strategies, and other issues related to commercial operations and transactions.
- Together with the Data Privacy team, collaborate with all business stakeholders and external third parties to ensure the company’s compliance with data protection laws, including GDPR, and oversee compliance with data privacy policies and procedures.
Technology and Product Support:
- Partner with our innovative LABS team to create, develop and deliver new products and services.
- Collaborate with product, operations and technology teams to provide legal support on operations, product delivery, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance.
Litigation Management:
- Oversee and manage all aspects of litigation, including large and small claims.
- Coordinate with external legal counsel and manage litigation budgets and strategies.
Team Collaboration:
- Help mentor and collaborate with a team of legal professionals, fostering a collaborative work environment.
- Advise on legal issues related to technology licensing, software development, and digital content.
Qualifications and desirable skills:
- Qualified solicitor or barrister in the UK / AUS / NZ with a minimum of 7 years of post-qualification experience.
- Experience in corporate law (both public and private markets), data privacy, and commercial law, within the technology sector (bonus if you’ve worked for a marketplace) together with a proven track record of delivering on objectives and providing strategic legal advice and support to senior management.
- Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring team members and excellent negotiation, drafting, and communication skills.
- Deep understanding of the legal and regulatory landscape affecting technology businesses and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment whilst prioritising workload.
- Familiar with and able to adopt new and existing legal technologies to advance innovation.
